The Transgender Foundation of
America's archive of transgender history is the beating heart of
the transgender center located in Houston, Texas. For far too
long, transgenders lived without a sense of history as a people.
The Houston Transgender Archive addresses this by actively
searching out and acquiring transgender history.
Currently, the archive holds
transgender magazines dating back to 1750, transgender statues
from diverse cultures such a China, Africa and Europe, original
newspapers recording transgender history dating back to 1825,
rare transgender books dating back to the 1600s, original
transgender photos dating back to before the Civil War and other
transgender artifacts dating back as far as the Roman Empire.
Additionally, the archive
holds a diverse collection of modern pop culture items
such as:
Original Christine
Jorgenson memorabilia (original photos, autographs,
media and letters)
Original memorabilia
from most all significant transgender movies
(Including German, Parisian, Spanish and English
cultures)
Original autographs
of actors in transgender roles (From Transamerica
and Boys Don't Cry to Myra Breckenridge and Eddie
Izzard)
Original transgender
pop art dating back to the 1800s
Rare autographed
transgender books from such diverse authors as Gore
Vidal, Jan Morris, Quinton Crisp and more.
The historical archive creates an
educational opportunity that is absolutely unique. No other
collection of transgender history like the Houston Transgender
Archive is known to exist anywhere. The collection offers
students, community members and supporters a unique
opportunity to access centuries of information about the
transgender community.
